Compatriot Knight

Mr. George S. Knight, a native of Livingston, Tennessee, received law degrees from Vanderbilt and Georgetown universities. His military service included three years active duty with the Navy during World War II and 24 years with the Naval Reserve. He began his civil service career as an assistant legal adviser with the State Department in 1934. After World War II, he returned to the State Department, where he worked in international law. In addition to the SAR, He was active in the National Rifle Association, serving as chairman of the Firearms Civil Rights Legal Defense Fund and as a member of its Legislative Police Committee and Executive Council.

Knight Essay Contest

1st Bank of the US

The George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest was originally established and named in honor of President Calvin Coolidge, who won a local SAR essay contest while a student at Amherst. The contest was reestablished in 1988 by Compatriot McCarthy DeMere. In 1995, the contest was renamed the George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest in honor of their generous gift to the SAR to support this contest. The program is designed to give junior and senior students an opportunity to explore events that shaped American history.

The contest is for an original researched and proven topic written in English. The topic of the essay shall deal with: an event, person, philosophy, or ideal associated with the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United States Constitution.

Awards: First Place: $2,000; a winning recognition certificate and medal; airfare and one night hotel stay for the winner and a chaperone at the SAR Annual Congress. Second Place: $1,000 Third Place: $500.

The Sons of Liberty Chapter will accept entries from the the first twenty students in Los Angeles County who submit an entry in compliance with all rules between September 1 and December 1 of each year. Entries not in compliance, or those submitted before or after the deadline will not be considered.
