General Membership Meeting 20 September 2025; CAR State President of California!
The Sons of Liberty Chapter will hold an IN PERSON General Membership Meeting.
Please join us on Saturday, September 20th at 12 noon until 2:00
We will have two speakers! Speaker 1 will talk for about 10 minutes, plus the main speaker
Speaker 1: Julia Harr, California State President, Children of the American Revolution
Julia will speak about her project at Children of the American Revolution and give an intro of what CAR is. To thrive, SAR chapters should be actively working with DAR and CAR. The CAR is children under the age of 21, boys and girls, who have a qualifying Patriot Ancestor as do the adults in SAR and DAR. Bring your children, grandchildren, or other youngsters who have questions about CAR!
Julia has been a Girl Scout for ten years and works each summer now as a Counselor in Training at Camp Mariposa in Altadena. She is also a member, with her mother and sisters, of National Charity League, an organization where mothers and daughters volunteer together. She is the ASB Treasurer at her high school and a member of the National Honor Society. She is also one of six members of the Pilgrim School Impact Program, a pilot program at her school where students spend three years volunteering and exploring their local community needs before completing a capstone project in their last year.
At C.S.S.C.A.R. State Conference, Julia was named State Outstanding Society Member. She has also been a Junior Page at all CSSDAR Events for the past two years and served as the Martin Severance Chapter Regent’s page, this past year. When not volunteering, Julia participates in dance and in musical theater at her school. She is learning Mandarin and ASL. She is proud to serve as State President for the California State Society, Children of the American Revolution.
Speaker 2: Stewart Davenport, PhD.
Topic: Declaration of Independence
After growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, Stewart Davenport went on to receive his Ph.D. in History from Yale in 2001. He is currently Professor of History at Pepperdine University, teaching courses in American History from the Revolutionary era through the Civil War, approximately 1750-1880.. In his scholarship, he likes to pick topics that are ethically pressing in the present, but whose origins are deep in the past and thus open to historical exploration. His first book, “Friends of the Unrighteous Mammon”: Northern Christians and Market Capitalism, 1815-1860 (University of Chicago Press, 2008) explores the tensions between capitalism and the values of America’s Christian culture in which it flourished. His second book, Sex and Sects: The Story of Mormon Polygamy, Shaker Celibacy, and Oneida Complex Marriage (2022, UVA Press), was inspired by the gay marriage debate in the early 2000s and recently won the Communal Studies Association’s Timothy Miller Outstanding Book Award. He and his wife Mary, and children, Shiloh and Archer, live in South Pasadena.
We are back at the Tam! The Tam O’Shanter has been a regular meeting place for Sons of Liberty Chapter SAR for years, and we are pleased to return to the Tam!
The more people present, the better! Make plans to attend our regular meeting at the Tam!
There is no official dress code, but most of our members wear a coat and tie to attend our General Membership Meetings. If you’d like to buy an official SAR tie, speak with our Treasurer at our next meeting!
