General Membership Meeting 16 November 2024, Virginia, 1622-1624: Why We Need to know about the Second Anglo-Powhatan War

The Sons of Liberty Chapter will hold an IN PERSON General Membership Meeting.

Please join us on Saturday, November 16th at 12 noon until 1:30

Presenter: Peter C. Mancall

Title of Talk: Virginia, 1622-1624: Why We Need to know about the Second Anglo-Powhatan War

The second Anglo-Powhatan war began in March 1622 with a devastating Powhatan attack on English colonists in Virginia.  The losses for the colonists were horrendous.  But the attack also punctured English assumptions about the colonization of eastern North America. The years following the attack altered the course of American history.

Peter C. Mancall is Distinguished Professor and the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities at the University of Southern California with appointments in History, Anthropology, and Economics.  He also directs the USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute.  He is the author of seven books, including The Trials of Thomas Morton: An Anglican Lawyer, His Puritan Foes, and the Battle for a New England (2019).  His next book, Troubled Continent: The Creation of a New World, 1000-1680, scheduled for publication in late 2025 or early 2026, will be volume one of the Oxford History of the United States.
