Alexander Spotswood II, Patriot Ancestor of W. Scott Campbell, was the son of John Spotswood and Mary Dandridge (making him a cousin to Martha Washington) and was born 16 October 1746 in Newport, VA. He married Elizabeth Washington (George's niece by his oldest half-brother) on 15 Feb 1769.

He was a member of the 2nd Virginia Regiment of Horse Cavalry in 1775 as Major under Colonel Woodford. In December 1776, the 2d Virginia Regiment was ordered to join Washington's Main Army in New Jersey. Colonel Woodford was promoted to brigadier general and Alexander Spotswood became colonel of the 2d Virginia Regiment on February 21, 1777.

The regiment marched to Baltimore, Maryland where it was equipped and then dispatched to Maryland's Eastern Shore to suppress local Loyalists, before making their way to Philadelphia for clothing, and finally joined the Main Army as part of Weedon's Brigade in Greene's Division.

In 1780, after a regiment of the 2nd Virginia was annihilated at Waxhaws under Buford, he petitioned General Washington for promotion to General. His request denied, he resigned from the Continental Army to form his own troop of Cavalry. The Spotswood Legion was never fully formed nor had it taken the field by the time Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown. The father of thirteen children, Alexander died in Spotsylvania, VA in 1818.
