- [Ben Franklin Twice!](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/ben-franklin-twice/): There are TWO television events featuring Ben Franklin! One is the Ken Burns documentary called Benjamin Franklin. Burns always does an excellent job with his documentaries. This one airs on PBS Passport and is also available on Amazon Prime, VUDU, and Apple TV. The other is a new mini series called Franklin, starring Michael Douglas as Ben Franklin. This series premieres on April 12, 2024 and appears to be exclusively on Apple TV, but may be available elsewhere later. Ben Franklin is one of America’s founding fathers.
- [Boston Tea Party 250 Anniversary](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/boston-tea-party-250-anniversary/): The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773. This December of 2023 is the 250th Anniversary of that momentous occasion. American colonists were frustrated with Britain for their policy of “no taxation without representation” and dumped 342 chests of tea in Boston harbor from Griffin’s Wharf. The Stamp Act was passed in 1765, taxing colonists on printed paper items including newspapers, playing cards and legal documents including wills. He spoke about Colonial Currency, in both the colonies and the new country the United States. You can still register and view recordings through the end of the year. - [Discover Colonial Ancestors](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/discover-colonial-ancestors/): Family Tree Magazine has a cover story on their May/June 2023 issue about Colonial Ancestors, with 11 Key Records for Early US Research, 1620-1776. The article has some good tips to get started, or more details for diving deeper. If you have a Patriot Ancestor, you may want to search some record hints for your proof, or you may want to dig deeper to find more about their ancestors. Their website has some articles and hints about Early American Genealogy as well.

- [Battle of Cowpens](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/battle-of-cowpens/): Battle of Cowpens, (January 17, 1781), in the American Revolution, brilliant American victory over a British force on the northern border of South Carolina that slowed Lord Cornwallis’s campaign to invade North Carolina. British casualties were estimated at about 600, whereas the Americans lost only 72. Read more from the Britannica website.
- [Battle of Princeton](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/battle-of-princeton/): The American victory at the Battle of Princeton (January 3, 1777) was one of the most consequential of the American Revolution. George Washington and his soldiers marched north from Trenton and attacked a British force south of the town. Washington’s victory bolstered American morale and provided great confidence to his soldiers. Read more at the Mount Vernon website.
- [Washington Crossing the Delaware](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/washington-crossing-the-delaware/): Washington crossed the Delaware for a surprise attack in December 1776. It was not guaranteed success. In fact, spies and deserters informed the British that Trenton was likely to be attacked. Washington even considered canceling the entire operation. - [North Carolina](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/north-carolina/): North Carolina ratified the Constitution and became the twelfth state in the Union on November 21, 1789. More information can be found at the Library of Congress.
- [Evacuation Day](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/evacuation-day/): November 25 marks a remembrance of Evacuation Day. In 1783, the British Army departed from New York City, after the end of the Revolutionary War. Wikipedia has a summary of the day.

- [May 1775](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/may-1775/): On May 10, 1775, American forces led by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold capture Fort Ticonderoga in New York. The fort contains a much needed supply of military equipment including cannons which are then hauled to Boston by ox teams. Also on May 10, 1775, The Second Continental Congress convenes in Philadelphia, with John Hancock elected as its president. On May 15, the Congress places the colonies in a state of defense. On June 15, the Congress unanimously votes to appoint George Washington general and commander-in-chief of the new Continental Army. These references are from The History Place about the American[...]
- [March 1776 the British Evacuate Boston](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/march-1776-the-british-evacuate-boston/): In 1768, the British entered Boston Harbor, which began an eight year occupation of the city. Two years later the Boston Massacre took place on the streets of Boston, angering Patriots all the more. In March 1776, the British evacuated the city of Boston. Washington had placed fortifications and cannon on Dorchester Heights, which from the south, has a superior position above the city. Canon had been retrieved from Fort Ticonderoga. On March 17, the British retreated with 11,000 British troops and some 1,000 Loyalists, departing by ship. More information can be found at History.com.
- [February French Alliance](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/february-french-alliance/): On February 6, 1778, the United States and France signed a Treaty of Alliance in Paris. A defensive alliance to aid France was provided if England attacked, and neither country would make peace with England until US independence was recognized. General George Washington issued an order later that year. Details can be found at the US History website about Valley Forge.
- [Flag Day June 14](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/flag-day-june-14/): Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 every year, which coincides with the adoption of the US flag on June 14, 1777 by the Second Continental Congress. This date in 1775 is also is the birthday of the US Army. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day in 1916. In 1949 an Act of Congress established Flag Day, which is not an official holiday. If a flag is flow upside down, it is a sign of distress. This is a plot point used in some movies, as military personnel were aware of this but the enemy was not.[...]
- [Common Sense January 1776](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/common-sense-january-1776/): In January of 1776. Thomas Paine’s Common Sense was published. Paine used common language for common people to rebel against the authority of Britain. He called government a “necessary evil.” The monarch and the aristocrats are tyrants who rule by heredity and contribute nothing to the people. Common Sense was read aloud in taverns and meeting places. Common Sense was “the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era,” according to historian Gordon S. Wood. The copyright has expired, the work is in the public domain and can be found at several places online. Read it this January!

- [Christmas 1775 and 1776](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/christmas-1775-and-1776/): Christmas 1775 During the first Christmas of the American Revolution, Martha Washington traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts to be with her husband. Martha’s presence at the Continental Army’s winter encampments not only helped to encourage George Washington, but also boosted the morale of the entire camp. Christmas 1776 During one of the darkest moments of the American Revolution, Gen. George Washington led his army over the frozen Delaware River on the evening of December 25, 1776. The famous Crossing of the Delaware led to the Battle of Trenton and a string of victories that revived the cause. Revolutionary War Widow’s Pension in 1906 Did you know that the there was a Revolutionary War widow’s pension still active in 1906? Esther Sumner (Damon) was 21 yrs. old in 1835 when she married 75 year old Revolutionary War veteran, Noah Damon, and was receiving a widows’ pension until she passed away in Nov. 1906. The youngest Revolutionary War ancestor our Chapter represents is probably John Howard Jr. – Patriot ancestor of Wally Lauzon. John Howard was 14 yrs. old in 1782 when he acted a spy, eavesdropping on loyalists[...]
- [Thanksgiving 1789](https://sons-of-liberty-sar.org/thanksgiving-1789/): George Washington, the first US President, was also the first to proclaim thanksgiving as a national celebration. His proclamation was on October 3, 1789. This was after a confidential letter to James Madison asking how to approach the Senate to ask for such a holiday. Following Presidents failed to honor the tradition. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln made a similar proclamation, also on October 3, setting Thanksgiving as a national holiday on the last Thursday of November.
